Internship Program For Fresh Graduates USA
The contributions made by students and recent graduates of all ages and backgrounds are valued by the federal government. However, when it comes to attracting and retaining students and new grads, we have been put at a competitive disadvantage when compared to other industries. On December 27, 2010, President Obama issued Executive Order 13562, titled "Recruiting and Hiring Students and Recent Graduates," to address these issues.
Two new programs were created and one program was changed by this executive order. The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program is for individuals who have earned an advanced degree (e.g., graduate or professional degree) within the previous two years. The Recent Graduates Program is for individuals who have recently graduated from qualifying educational institutions or programs (2 years from the date the graduate completed an academic course of study). The Pathways Program are a group of streamlined developmental initiatives designed to increase job prospects for college students and new grads in the federal workforce.
In order to carry out these programs, OPM published a final Pathways Rule as instructed by the Executive Order. The final rule aims to enhance recruiting efforts, provide clear pathways to Federal internships for students from high school through post-graduate school and to careers for recent graduates, as well as to provide substantive training and career development opportunities for people who are just starting their Federal service.
Program for Internships
The Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) and Student Temporary Employment Program are replaced by the Internship Program (STEP). This program is intended to give students enrolled in a wide range of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, the chance to work in agencies and investigate jobs in the federal government while still enrolled in classes and while earning money for the work completed. Students who complete the program successfully could qualify for conversion to a permanent position in the civil service. You may get more details about the internship program at official website.
Program Management
- Each hiring organisation is primarily responsible for managing the internship programs.
- In order to fulfil the educational requirement, organisations may hire interns on a temporary basis for up to a year at a time.
- Interns have the option of working full- or part-time.
- A Participant Agreement that outlines the requirements for the internship must be signed by each agency and the intern.
- The internship position will be connected to the intern's academic objectives or area of study.
- Agencies inform OPM of their internship opportunities and make information on how to apply for individual positions publicly available on official website.
Conversion and completion of the programme
- Complete 640 hours or more of internship-related job experience.
- fulfil the prerequisites for a degree or certificate
- satisfy the requirements for the post to which the intern will be promoted
- comply with the agency-specific requirements listed in the Participant's Agreement, and successfully carry out their duties.
In the case of interns who have great potential as shown by strong academic success and exceptional job performance, agencies may waive up to 320 of the 640 hours of labour that are necessary.
Students may also apply up to 320 of the hours they work for organisations through third-party intern providers toward the 640-hour requirement.
Prior Internship Program appointments may count toward the necessary number of hours of work experience.
